Let’s look at the basic idiom of the ‘carrot and stick’: rewarding good behaviour with a treat, or punishing bad behaviour. But what motivates people more? Do people perform better when they risk being punished for bad actions and performance? Or do they ‘blossom’ with the possibility of being rewarded for exceeding expectations? There are many ways to motivate your people. Strong leadership, setting goals, creating sense of purpose, success, recognition, rewards, engagement, empowerment and personal achievement all contribute to the complexity of ‘feeling motivated’. Although success is relative, success is something that all Managers aim to achieve, and can be attainable.
