Setting strategy is the easier part. Implementing it is harder. The question to ask yourself and challenge your management is; 'How do you make strategy come alive'?
Many strategy implementations fail. Many fade out along the way, or simply fail to deliver the intended ROI. The reason for the failure is that in order for business strategy to work well, strategy must be implemented in a disciplined way, over a period of time, allowing the company and people to adjust and respond to the change. Unfortunately, often managers set the vision / direction for the company, but 18 months later nobody has looked at it again!
To truly make strategy come alive, leaders need to;
- Communicate the strategy - Ensure people understand the strategy - Help buy-in to the strategy - Ensure that people understand their role in achieving the strategy goals. Management too must play a key part of in process. This includes having the disciplines and processes to follow through on strategy in the long run. Report on progress and celebrate successes.
A 'golden rule' of reviewing strategy implementation will help achievement of success. Management should ask the questions:
- Where are we? - Where do we want to be? - How are we going to get here? - How are we tracking? Knowing this will pay handsome dividends in the long run. Visit your vision and strategy in order to achieve it!
