Critical Business Focus - Internal vs External

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

Change creates uncertainty! ‘Change’ brings on a range of emotions, many negative, resulting in behaviour that forces people to focus on themselves rather than the company they work for. Of course you are not surprised … that’s how you respond. The challenge then is, as Leaders and Senior Managers, “What are you doing to help minimise the uncertainty, reduce anxiety and fear of your people?”

Building a healthy and resilient executive team during tough times is a critical step towards business sustainability. The mood, behaviours and actions of the leadership team will directly impact the performance of your people, with direct impact on the bottom-line.

In most instances the management team remains focused on operational performance. Certainly a good thing … or is it?
If no time is spent discussing the health and performance of the ‘Senior Team’, in almost every case, the team will be underperforming. This happens even more so during tough times.

Even though our Critical Leadership Survey highlights ‘customer centricity’ as an increased focus for many CEOs, my experience with many Senior Teams highlights the urgent need to harness their (the Senior Leadership) potential during tough economic times. Remember … their job is to motivate people, not only manage processes!

To all the bushfire heroes …. ‘Thank you’. To all those suffering loss …. ‘We think of you’.
