People seldom get the recognition they deserve
Friday, March 30th, 2007I was sitting in the Airline lounge earlier today and wondering about the last time the cleaners were recognised for their contributrion. In most organisations I come across, people at the ‘front-line’, who make an enormous difference to the environement we all work in, seldom get the recognition they deserve. Why is that?
Is it because we are too busy on our own self preservation that we are oblivious to others? Even some times our direct reports. Is it because we don’t recognise the jobs and functions of these people as important? Is it because the type of menial labour these people perform is not something we would now do ourselves, even if at some point in our lives we did? Is it because the pay grade is beneath ours? Do we feel our job is so much more important?
One day I hope that Managers and CEO’s feel as passionate about the work of the front-line employee, as they do about their own tasks. This would bring about a significant feeling of well being and pride to many in the company. Recognising people for their contribution is one of the easiest ways to increase productivity and employee happiness. Try it sometime. Let me know the outcomes!
